Traditions: The transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation.

When I was growing up we had a lot of traditions. Most of our traditions focused on the holidays. When my children were born we carried on those traditions and they became part of that.

Fast forward a few decade and those traditions have all changed. My parents are gone. My siblings children are all grown and have families of their own. Thanksgiving and Christmas find us wondering what are we going to do as a family? Last year we started having a brunch on the Saturday after Christmas. We are going to continue to do that each year.

Holidays aside, I wanted to start a new family tradition. We started that last night. My nieces and nephews brought their children here for a movie night.

The kids are snuggled on the blankets and John projected the movie Toy Story on the side of our neighbor’s house. I made caramel and buttered popcorn. I made chocolate chip cookies and had movie candy. I had drinks for the adults.

As I sat in my chair and watched everyone enjoying the evening I thought about how I want to do this every September. A back to school tradition. Having a tradition at a time of year, away from the holidays, everyone was able to make it.

The little kids were laughing and enjoying each other. Making memories.

It was all good.
